This structured Commercial Gas learning programme is designed for new entrants seeking to qualify in commercial gas work. Includes theory, practical training, and portfolio development. Standard ACS assessment includes COCN1 and ICPN1. Additional modules may be added if experience allows. Not available as a reassessment.
The Commercial Gas MLP (Managed Learning Programme) at Vulcana Training is the recognised route into the commercial gas industry for new entrants without previous gas qualifications. It combines structured centre-based learning with on-site experience, preparing candidates for ACS assessment and Gas Safe registration.
Training is delivered over a 6-month period, with learners attending the centre for one week per month. Between centre visits, learners must build a portfolio of on-site work, signed off by a registered and experienced Gas Safe engineer.
Once the portfolio is complete and approved, candidates will return to Vulcana to complete their final ACS commercial assessments.
Gas safety legislation and core knowledge
Commercial pipework sizing, installation and pressure testing
Flueing and ventilation standards for commercial systems
Unsafe situations and emergency procedures
Appliance installation, commissioning and servicing
Combustion analysis and fault-finding techniques
Portfolio building and evidence gathering
Final ACS preparation and mock assessments
Once ACS is complete, you may also add:
TPCP1 / TPCP1A – Testing and purging for commercial systems
COMCAT Modules – If expanding into commercial catering
This programme is for new entrants to the gas industry. You must:
Have relevant prior experience or training in plumbing, heating, or building services (e.g. mechanical engineering)
Have a workplace or mentor able to support your portfolio development
Be committed to attending scheduled centre training weeks over the 6-month period
Provide references or evidence of previous experience during enrolment
Not applicable.
This is a new entrant route. Once qualified through ACS, future renewals will be completed via standard ACS reassessment routes (e.g. COCN1 reassessment).
All candidates are required to complete a paper-based portfolio throughout the course
Portfolio evidence must demonstrate a variety of real-world commercial gas activities, such as pipework installation, flueing, appliance commissioning and safety testing
Evidence must be gathered while working under the supervision of a Gas Safe registered commercial engineer
Portfolios are reviewed during each centre-based week and must be completed and signed off before sitting the final ACS assessments
If you do not already have a placement, we can advise on what’s required and how to secure one.
Standard qualification achieved through this MLP includes:
COCN1 – Core Commercial Gas Safety
ICPN1 – First Fix Commercial Pipework
Additional ACS modules may be added if sufficient portfolio evidence and on-site experience are demonstrated in these areas:
CORT1 – Overhead Radiant Tube Heaters
CIGA1 – Indirect-Fired Appliances
These are optional and will be discussed with each candidate during the programme.
