This six-month Managed Learning Programme is for new entrants to the gas industry. It prepares learners for ACS assessments in CCN1 and CENWAT, with the option to add CKR1 and HTR1 if suitable on-site experience is gained. ACS is completed in a separate week following the MLP.
The Domestic Natural Gas Managed Learning Programme (MLP) at Vulcana Training is designed for new entrants who want to become fully qualified domestic gas engineers. This structured programme combines hands-on experience with classroom training and prepares candidates for their ACS assessments in Core Domestic Gas Safety (CCN1) and Boilers & Water Heaters (CENWAT).
The MLP is delivered over six months, with learners attending the training centre one week per month. Alongside this, candidates must build a portfolio of evidence from real on-site experience under the supervision of a registered gas engineer.
On completion of the MLP, learners return for a dedicated one-week ACS assessment, which includes refresher training and formal assessment in line with the ACS scheme.
MLP Training & Portfolio Development
Includes theoretical learning, practical training, and supervised portfolio work:
Gas legislation and safety standards
Pipework installation and testing
Appliance installation, commissioning and servicing
Combustion, ventilation and flueing
Identifying and responding to unsafe situations
ACS Week (Booked separately after MLP completion)
CCN1 – Core Domestic Gas Safety
CENWAT – Boilers & Water Heaters
Includes refresher training and formal ACS assessments.
Candidates who gain sufficient on-site experience during the MLP may also be eligible to add the following appliance modules during their ACS assessment week:
CKR1 – Domestic cookers
HTR1 – Gas fires and space heaters
These are assessed alongside CCN1 and CENWAT where portfolio evidence supports the required competence.
This programme is suitable for new entrants who:
Hold a qualification or have experience in plumbing, heating, or a related field
Have a general understanding of domestic heating and hot water systems
Are employed or placed in the industry with access to supervised on-site work
Candidates are responsible for securing their own placement to complete the workplace portfolio. You must have a supervising engineer who can sign off your evidence.
This course is for new entrants only and is not eligible for reassessment. Reassessment applies only to existing ACS-qualified engineers renewing their certification, not those entering the industry for the first time.
Paper-based portfolio completed over six months
Reviewed during each centre-based training week
Includes evidence of supervised on-site tasks signed off by a qualified engineer
Must be completed before booking the ACS assessment
