This OFTEC-accredited course for new entrants includes oil safety (101), pressure jet appliances (105e), and oil storage (600a). Candidates without a recognised qualification must complete a portfolio. Not available as a reassessment.
The OFTEC 50 course at Vulcana Training is a complete entry route for new entrants looking to work in the oil heating sector. It provides full training and assessment in the core OFTEC modules: OFT101 (oil safety and practices), OFT105e (pressure jet appliances), and OFT600a (oil storage and supply systems) – all included within this single course.
This course is suitable for individuals from a related trade background or those with practical experience who want to become OFTEC-registered engineers.
Important Note:
If you do not hold a recognised plumbing or heating qualification, you will need to complete a portfolio of evidence alongside your training.
If you do hold a relevant qualification (such as ACS gas or an NVQ in plumbing), no portfolio is required – you can complete the course and assessments during the centre-based week.
OFT101 – Oil Safety and Practices
OFT105e – Pressure Jet Appliances
OFT600a – Oil Storage and Supply Systems
All three modules are included as part of the OFTEC 50 course and are assessed during the 4-day programme.
Training covers:
Oil combustion principles and system components
Installation of boilers and heating appliances
Storage tank regulations and environmental protection
Flueing, ventilation, commissioning and servicing
Health, safety, and compliance with OFTEC standards
Refresher content is provided before assessments in each module.
Once qualified, candidates can expand their scope by adding:
OFT102 – Oil-fired range cookers (Agas, Rayburns, etc.)
Solid Fuel Courses – Wet, Dry or Combined systems for multi-fuel heating options
These additional modules are ideal for engineers working in rural or off-grid environments.
This course is for new entrants to the heating industry who:
Have relevant experience or are from a related trade (e.g. plumbing, building, electrical), and
Wish to become OFTEC registered for oil-fired installations
Candidates without plumbing or heating qualifications must:
Complete a supervised portfolio of evidence during or before the course
Be supported by a mentor or employer for on-site sign-off
Candidates with relevant qualifications may complete the course without the need for a portfolio.
OFTEC 50 is an initial entry route only and cannot be used for reassessment.
If you already hold OFTEC 101, 105e, and 600a and need to renew your qualifications, you will need to book the OFTEC Reassessment Package instead.
